Signing up was super easy! It took me only 30 minutes to download the Dasher App, create my account, upload all required information, and submit my driver’s license.  The app also prompted me to take my photo (front, left side, right side) for security purposes and even ran a background check on me through Checkr.  It was quick, easy, and painless and after 30 minutes, the app told me I was ready to make money. So the next night, I decided to try it out in real time!
I scheduled my first Dash for Saturday night at 6:30 because I wanted to see how well I could do in a peak time when people should be hungry and wanting food. I took my husband and kids with me because we were all curious. I let him drive, so that I could do the actual dashing part. In the first hour, we completed three orders. After that my kids were bored, so I dropped everyone off at home and went back out by myself.
In a little over two hours, I completed five orders total. Three of these were super easy and fast deliveries (two from the same Panda Express location and one was Wendy’s. However, two were around 15 minutes each one way and totally didn’t feel worth it.
There were a few surprises. The second house I went to belonged to someone I had met before, which I found hilarious! Not so funny was first going the wrong way in the dark and then getting stuck in an area I wasn’t familiar in because of a malfunctioning railroad crossing arm.
I also learned that there is a line I won’t cross with DoorDash. The second order I accepted was for a beer pickup from 7-11. I was supposed to drop it off for the customer and then scan their id before leaving it. This made me feel a little uncomfortable overall, so I cancelled the order after accepting it. I have zero judgment towards someone wanting to drink, but I’m guessing if they ordered beer to be delivered they were already drunk and drunk can mean a lot of different things, which is not something I wanted to deal with in the dark.
Only one of the houses I went to wanted me to hand deliver the food, which was in this case a box of cookies. I was a little bit nervous about this at first, but it was a nice neighborhood and the man I delivered to was cool so it worked out fine.
Something that I really liked is that the Door Dash app includes a safety feature called SafeDash. If you feel unsafe at any time, you can activate SafeDash and you will be put in touch with an ADT agent who will stay on the call with you or send emergency assistance if needed.
Here’s the breakdown:
Time Dashed (Total time out driving): 2 hours 39 minutes
Active Time (Time where I had orders I was working on): 1 hour, 56 minutes
Total Made: $45.75
Total Orders: 5
Pros:
- Easy work
- Very little human contact aside from telling the restaurant what order you are there for
- Quick pay options: Direct Deposit every Monday, Fast Pay (daily pay for a $1.99 fee), or DasherDirect prepaid card.
- App navigator gave very good, concise directions.
- Dashing instructions were very clear and easy to follow.
- Kids can come along while you work
- SafeDash safety feature
Cons:
- DoorDash app was glitchy
- Vehicle wear and tear plus cost of gas
- Peak times are often at night, when it is hard to see street signs and house numbers
- Finding apartments can be tricky and time-consuming
- Wasted time sitting around in parking lot or driving while waiting for orders to come in
- Hard to accept orders on phone while driving
How do you apply to work for DoorDash?Â
It’s easy! Just download the DoorDash Dasher app on your phone and apply that way. You can also apply by clicking here.
Is Door Dash Mom friendly?
I would have to say yes to this. It can be done while the kids are at school or with kids at dinner time if you have to. I did try this with my kids, but dropped them off back home after they got bored. Doing Door Dash with a baby or little one  in tow is not a good idea unless you have another adult in the car to watch the kid while you run into the restaurant or to the door to deliver food. I felt pretty safe doing Door Dash, which was a big plus for me.
Final Thoughts
DoorDash is good for extra cash fast, but I wouldn’t want to rely on it solely as my only source of income. If you need grocery money or really want to splurge for a meal out or have a bill to pay, having DoorDash as a money option could be very helpful!
