I have been doing crayon art for years and typically after hot gluing the crayons to a canvas, I use a hair dryer to melt them. This method is tried and true and will work year-round, regardless of the weather. I recommend doing it outside though on a covered surface because hot wax does fly!
Last summer though, I was curious to know if the sun would do the work for me. We live in Texas and our summers are crazy hot through end of August at least, so I had some high temps to work with. The sun did not disappoint and it was the perfect companion to my Crayola art on canvas. I managed to get both of my daughters involved in this, even my teenager, so it was a total win!

Instructions
For this project, I bought some wood carvings for the center. There were many to choose from! We painted each one a different color of acrylic paint and then hot glued it to the center of an 11×14 canvas.
I like to buy a lot of different crayon colors and Crayola has a ton to choose from! We went through at least a hundred crayons for this project, but this part is totally up to you. It is important to use Crayola crayons for this as the others don’t melt the same.
You will then need to remove the paper from your crayons. Soak them in water first as this will help break down the glue on the paper seal for easy removal.
Lay your canvas down on a flat surface. Use a hot glue gun to glue your crayons to the canvas.
Find a sunny spot outside with direct sunlight. Place an old sheet or towel on the ground. Place each canvas on top of the barrier.
Wait for the crayons to melt! This may happen very quickly if it’s really hot outside. Check on your art every five or ten minutes to see how it’s progressing.
Once crayons have melted, you may want to repeat the process a time or two. Keep adding crayons to your canvas until you get your desired effect.
I ended up buying wall frames for mine and have it displayed in the living room.
